  • The six benefits of artificial grass

When it comes to lawn maintenance many of the population can take it or leave it with myself being one of the latter. Artificial solutions have taken the UK by storm over the past decade with many people opting for composite decking and cladding over timber alternatives and turf is now no different!

    August 07 2018
  • Let’s face it, we’re all hating that our once lush green grass is now a parched mess. Yes, the heatwave of 2018 is sending us some pretty amazing weather, but it is enough to send anyone insane when it comes to our gardens. And there’s a hosepipe ban from 5th August 2018 for the North West of England  – thank you very much United Utilities.

It sadly means that your lush green lawn is only going to get in worse condition as August approaches. We’re thinking it could be the final straw for you (not the state of your grass, but your patience). So is now the time to be seriously considering going down the artificial grass route?

Here are six benefits to Ecoscape’s New Zealand Green Artificial Grass… if you feel that you need convincing further.

Ecoscape UK offer six types of artificial grass ideal for any property.

    Watering

In all seriousness, the lack of water in the UK's reservoirs is a massive concern right now, and it is likely to be a recurring problem, as summers get hotter and winters get milder. We should all be thinking about ways to reduce water usage. Replacing turf with artificial grass is a great step forward and something that hotter, water deficient countries, such as Spain, are opting for in their gardens, especially on new builds. Look at the Love Island Villa, for instance.

Bio Friendly Planet agrees that real turf requires much more watering than artificial grass. You do have to water synthetic grass down occasionally to remove dirt and debris, or if your pet uses it as a toilet. But, we are certainly not talking about sprinklers running for two hours at a time.

The same blog piece also suggests collecting water from your artificial grass. As, unlike real turf, the synthetic counterpart will not absorb water. If you were to create a suitable drainage system that collected the water in a storage facility you could then use it to water your plants and flowers (or to wash away the dog’s poop).

According to Gov.uk “reducing the amount of water we use helps protect the environment and conserves supplies during extended periods of dry weather.”

They suggest the following to use water wisely:

Resist the urge to use sprinklers and hosepipes. Do not water the lawn.
Go to the beach rather than filling the paddling pool
    Water plants after 9 pm
Install a water butt to capture any rainwater that does come our way and use to water plants and flowers.
    Short showers are best
Full loads of washing and dishes only
Use up washing up water to water the plants

Naturally, the downside of not watering your living grass is that it will turn yellow in dry spells. We love that artificial turfs stay green 365 days of the year.

    Reduces Your Carbon Footprint

Greenhouse gases are part of the global warming crisis and this year’s heatwave is a likely result of this. According to Friederike Otto, from Oxford University:

‘Heatwaves are far more intense than when my parents were growing up in the 1950s.’

‘If we do nothing to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, the kind of extreme heat we saw this past summer will be the norm when my young son is a grown man.’

Opting for artificial turf instead of the real deal will help to reduce your carbon footprint, as it does not require regular maintenance using fuel-guzzling equipment such as lawn mowers and strimmers. The most energy you really need to invest in is your own with a good sweep up, which your fitness watch and waistline will be very happy about.

    Long Life Span

Artificial Turf is expected to last up to 25 years, which is a better guarantee than living lawns. Less than a year into owning a real grass lawn and you have to top areas up with lawn seed, fight with weeds, clover and moss and make sure that drainage and soil quality is at it's best. You'll soon be wanting to completely re-turf and start afresh.

Our New Zealand Green Artificial Grass is quite the opposite. A well installed artificial lawn will look great for years and years with minimal aftercare.

Artificial Grass is great for pet owners

We’ve already touched on the poop issue, which is easy to clean and wash away on artificial grass – what a pet owner’s dream!

Ecoscape's artificial turf range is ideal for homes with pets.

However, artificial grass is also non-toxic, which is great for pets and their owners. That’s because you do not need to use dangerous weed killers, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides to protect it. A weedy lawn is a massive no, no for garden lovers, but pet owners must keep their animals away from the treated lawn to avoid potentially fatal digestion for at least 24 hours, and that’s very difficult to control. The only cleaning fluid an artificial lawn requires is a mild detergent when it gets spills and stained.

    Easy to Maintain

There is very little maintenance required once artificial grass is installed, which is ideal if maintenance isn't possible or practical. You may be a busy family who wants to spend time playing in the garden rather than mowing it, or you're green-fingered experience may be lacking. And this is no joke. To get close to achieving a lush green lawn that New Zealand Green artificial grass offers is a year around, day-to-day commitment.

Thousands of blogs and YouTube videos offer advice on living lawn maintenance from not walking on the grass during frosty periods, to putting down toxic weed and moss killers in Spring. Then you have to spike the grass, add new seed to bare patches and mow regularly. The list of tasks does not end there. It’s hard work and a massive commitment, especially if over watering the lawn results in a swampy mess!

Ecoscape Artificial Turf requires little maintenance.

    Perfect for any application

Our New Zealand Green Artificial Grass offers a beautiful aesthetic to residential lawns, urban and commercial landscape designs, leisure activities and children’s play areas. The fact that it stays a luscious green for 365 days a year and is very easy to maintain makes it a great investment too.
